Mad dogs and Englishmen

There were plenty of mooring buoys available in Fowey when we arrived in the early afternoon and we planned to do the Hall walk starting in Fowey. This is a circular walk with steep climbs and descents on a rough, track that is quite challenging in places. Not having had our traditional ‘dirty beer’ upon arrival, we looked forward to a beer at the Old Ferry Inn, above the Bodinnick ferry. Sods law again, it was closed down, and we had to embark on the walk without hydrating.

This popular walk is usually very busy with walkers but, in the heat, we only spotted one other couple braving it.

Approaching Polruan.

Smug with our achievement, the excellent, tucked away, Russell Inn in Polruan did provide the necessary beer and food to restore our spirits

The favoured Russell Inn, away from the popular ‘Lugger’ on the quay.

We appear to have a peculiar phenomenon going on. Our favoured weather/wind app, ‘Windy’ appears to be giving over twice the windspeed of other forecasting sources. Up to now, we have been slavishly trusting the Windy app but we are now questioning its accuracy as the reality is not fitting the predictions. It was Windy that was forecasting the Force 10 which has so irrevocably skewed our planning. Can apps have a stroke?

Richard writes;

Having readied ourselves for some extremely windy weather, it is absolutely glorious today and this has thrown the skipper into a state of confusion. What to do? Spend another day in Fowey, go for Penzance, try our luck in the Helford river or perhaps a marina in Falmouth?

So, now he has two things to worry about; where to go and Paula arriving in a few days.

Paula’s pending arrival is really worrying him, and we are under orders to clean everything; under the oven, the heads, the windows, the decks, etc, etc. But the main concern is blood on the sheets! Nick managed to pick the scab off a scratched insect bite on his leg and now there’s blood everywhere on the sheets and duvet. PANIC!!!!

  1. Nick, weather forecast
    For cycling met office is by far the best predictor of rain we find

    Do you use free or paid for ‘Windy” though for local wind innDeal and the “Downs” XC is best though no sites seem able to predict if a sea breeze will kick in

    Did you try your mast mounted fog horn for the French fishing boat

    Enjoy the trip

    1. I subscribe to the Premium Windy, although I am not sure now if it is worth it. We are now tending to look at a number of sites and aggregating them. Too late to restore the Scillies or Mounts Bay aspirations but Gweek has almost made up for it… Paula will now foreshorten her train to Penzance and get off at Truro. Oh well, best laid plans and all that…

  2. Did that Fowey walk a couple of years ago. Also found the same pub. Amazing how things work out. (I also have a genuine Capt. Haddock T shirt)

  3. As a frequent reader of Captain Haddock’s travails I am surprised to hear of his loss of blood – usually it’s only mentioned when it’s his round and then in the context of ‘blood out of a stone’!
