Southerly 135
Southerly 135 ‘Hejira’

Welcome to the home page of the yacht ‘Hejira’

‘Hejira’ is a Southerly 135 RS series III sailing yacht, built by Northshore in 2004 in Itchenor, UK and purchased in Holland in 2012. She was originally named after the previous owners children so it was felt appropriate to rename her.

She is a standard cutter rigged sloop with single line slab reefing, self tacking staysail and a raised saloon. Southerly yachts are unusual in that they have a swing keel enabling them to ‘take the ground’ or dry out between tides (see picture at the top) so that the draft (depth of water she needs to float) of Hejira is 1 metre with the keel raised or 3 metres with the keel fully lowered. Since her purchase, she has been substantially re-fitted, repaired and prepared for Ocean passage making – see   ‘Modifications and Improvements’

This web site is an attempt to consolidate previous hostings of location, track, images and the blog history (including the award winning accounts of the Atlantic crossings in November 2015  & June 2016 and the Video ‘Ollie and Friends‘ which won the Cruising Association ‘osCA’ award) into a central, easily accessed forum for family, friends and others interested in the adventures of ‘Hejira’ and her crew. It has since also become the repository of technical information, innovations and published articles.
