The organised tour of the island was interesting and enjoyable with our coach finally delivering us to the venue for the evening prize giving. The 1957 volcanic eruption added 2 square kilometres to the western end of Faial and the event was held in the underground visitor centre built within the volcanic ash. I was stunned to be presented with the āNavigatorās Awardā for the AWOL ‘rescue’ and Cliff, the skipper also presented me with a fine single malt gift pack. All very humbling and rather emotionalā¦ā¦..
Ollie departed to be replaced by Peter but our best laid plans for him to join us at the presentation were scuppered by him forgetting the detailed and comprehensive directions and his inability to remember where he had to go. So he went straight to Hejira and missed the excellent meal that had been laid on by the Tourist Board.
Following the entertaining blog contributions from Stephen, Bob and more recently Ollie, Peter is being pressed into writing. His partner, Marian said he would do a good job āso long as he doesnāt indulge his āweird sideā ā! I will let you be the judge of that.
Peter writes:-
Iāll speak to her later. Meanwhile, under a certain pressure, I have to follow Ollie who has done a sterling job. Plus I am advised this will be under strict editorial control. I am almost persuaded to write it in Sanskrit.
Have arrived in the midst of a very jolly gathering, becoming more jolly by the sip. I feel I was very fortunate to have missed the Presentation event. I’m not sure if I could have contained my emotions.
Barry has just suggested I begin this with āonce upon a timeā before he realised that he would actually be making a contribution to ‘The Blog’. I suspect that will be it, but what a result, if you have been following this for the past few months.
Congratulations on your well-deserved Navigators award. An act of true seamanship.
Many thanks for your very kind words.
It was a bit emotional and I have now posted a picture on the blog of me blubbing!
